General dentistry is a branch of medicine involved in the care of teeth. It focuses on the diagnosis, prevention, study and treatment of a variety of disorders and conditions of the maxillofacial areas and associated structures in the human body, as well as the oral cavity. Every country has specific regulations required of those who wish to pursue dentistry as a career. Some countries they must take at least two year of undergraduate course. Most go on to complete a full BA degree before pursuing specific dentistry training. Once done with the undergraduate training, an individual who wish to pursue with dentistry has to take four years studying in a dental college to qualify as a dentist. Once done with studies one can work as doctor of dental medicine, doctor of dental surgery.
General dentistry training allows a dentist to carry out most dental treatments. Commonest operations are filling, crowns bridges root canal, extraction of teeth and periodontal therapy and any person who has finished the course can deal with it. They have been taught how to prescribe sedatives, painkillers and antibiotics after finishing the full course. The dentist can also perform examinations, complete diagnoses and complete x-rays.
General dentistry’s main focus is to educate community on how to prevent oral ailments. What is important is educating patients on how to take regular check-ups, and how to clean their teeth properly. By avoiding certain foods it can help in preventing the mouth diseases.
